Some of you may have seen social media reports of a disturbance on Greenway on Friday night 24th January 2020, caused by a large group of people fighting in middle of the street. SAPS and JMPD were called and we have been told arrests were made. This is part of a larger, ongoing pattern of problem behaviour on the business strip at night.
Over recent years the Greenside business node has suffered as a result of multiple and ongoing contraventions of zoning, building processes, health and safety bylaws and liquor license laws in our suburb. This includes venues trading as clubs and bars using restaurant liquor licenses, venues selling alcohol without valid liquor licenses and venues selling alcohol to underage patrons. There are ongoing problems with noise disturbances, drunken patrons, environmental pollution, traffic chaos at night, drag racing, “car boot parties” on Gleneagles and Greenway roads. The residents of Greenside have been appealing all this time to the Liquor Board and local authorities to do more to address the problem activities.
As a result of this residents of Greenside are being driven away from the business area and this causes damage to legitimate business and harms day-time trade
The Greenside Residents Association has been collating complaints from residents and legitimate business owners relating to concerns and are committed to working with City and Provincial authorities to address these issues actively and protect the rights of all residents in the suburb. We are determined keep working on these issues so our beautiful suburb can flourish and we can enjoy the wonderful benefits that it offers.
We appeal to all residents of Greenside to support our efforts by emailing us any concerns or evidence of problems on info@gra.org.za, as well as volunteering to assist us on one of our subcommittees and joining the GRA and paying your 2020 annual subscription (R450 per household, all details can be found on our membership page )
