On a fairly regular basis residents find that they have no water supply into their homes. If this happens to you
-
Check with your neighbours if it is an area fault
-
this may be low / no supply from the Hursthill 2 reservoir system due to insufficient supply, airlocks after outages or planned maintenance
-
this may be more localised related to JoburgWater turning off water and flushing pipes to do repairs (when this happens thehydrants on your road – typically on the corners – will spray an alarming amount of water into the air. This is necessary to clear the pipes so they can be inspected and repaired)
-
When you see a hydrant that has water flowing from it at pressure like this, it is because Joburg Water is flushing pipes in order to work on them. Please don’t try to close the hydrant or report as a leak without first checking if Joburg water is working on pipes in the area

If the issue is only your property please check that nobody has turned off your water meter – this happens regularly. It is unclear whether this is simply vandalism or a strategy to see if a property is occupied
On the side of the meter is a rotating valve. When the arrow is pointing vertically up the valve is in the OPEN position. To close off the water it should be turned 90 degrees CLOCKWISE. Under pressure this can be very difficult. To open turn anti clockwise
If you have a leaking meter or a leak on your property there is an alternate way of turning off the water. If the leak is from within the meter, use this method as it is upstream of the meter which may be running furiously. Criminal may sometimes remove the valve to create a fountain at the meter in order to get the resident to come out of the property. Joburg Water also sometimes remove this valve if water has not been paid for – although they will turn off both valves so that water is not wasted.• Remove the blue lid by pulling it vertically upwards – this requires no tools and does not need a large amount of force.
• Remove the plastic cover cap by turning it counter-clockwise to expose a plastic hexagonal-shaped cap screw valve.
• Insert a 10 mm Alan key and rotate by 90 degrees until the water stops flowing.
